Chevrolet Corvette C8 Convertible Coming Sooner Than We Thought

MARTIN BIGG

It's already been over six weeks since the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe was revealed to the world, but we all know this won't be the only variant available for long. A convertible version is in the cards, and while Chevrolet has already confirmed the open-top Corvette C8 will debut sometime this fall, we now have a more specific timeframe. We were expecting the Corvette C8 convertible to break cover at the 2019 LA Auto Show in November, but Corvette Assembly Plant Manager Kai Spande has confirmed it will debut even earlier.

In a presentation outlining the 2020 Corvette Stingray's stages of production posted by Corvette: Sales, News & Lifestyle, Spande confirms the convertible version will be unveiled "in the October timeframe." We still don't have an exact date, but at least we now know the 2020 Corvette Stingray convertible will be shown before the LA Auto Show kicks off in late November.

Chevrolet has already previewed the new Corvette convertible during a video teaser, although a recent spy video gave us a closer look. Styling-wise, it looks identical to the coupe as you would expect, apart from the addition of rear buttresses and folding hardtop roof. A leaked document also confirmed the convertible C8 Corvette will have a curb weight of 3,637 pounds, making it only 102 pounds heavier than the coupe. That's impressive considering most convertibles are significantly heavier than their hardtop counterparts.

Under the hood, expect the C8 Corvette convertible to use the same 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine as the coupe, which sends 490 horsepower to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. 0-62 mph in the coupe takes less than three seconds before hitting a top speed of 194 mph. Chevrolet will also be revealing the new C8.R race car alongside the C8 Corvette convertible this fall.
